Homelessness Awareness Event Open Nov. 14 in Rockville
By Thania Requeno
Montgomery College students on Friday, November 14 will have an opportunity to hear what they can do to help the homeless. All students are invited to attend, “Sharing Challenges-Changing Lives” which will be presented by MC Leads Student Leadership Cohort Fall 2014.
The event takes place on the Rockville campus from 3- 4:30 pm.
A guest speaker from the National Coalition of Homelessness (NCH) will visit MC Rockville. NCH was formed in 1982. The Coalition carries out projects, such as:
- advocacy,
- lobbying,
- outreach runs,
- collaborations with shelters,
- hosting,
- panel discussions, and so much more.
Students who attend will also be given an opportunity to hear first-hand experiences from individuals who have experienced homelessness.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Point in Time Survey, January 2013, said 33% of all homeless people were youths under the age of 24. Moreover, 23 percent of that total were children under the age of 18. This does not mean homelessness can victimize one set of demographic. There have been individuals enrolled at MC who were homeless.
Bringing homelessness awareness to just one MC student can create a powerful movement in our community. MC Leads is encouraging students to bring canned goods. All donations will be given to MC’s Food Pantry.
Join MC Leads at this special event to empower the community. There will be light refreshments for all guests.
