Montgomery College Seeks New Student Board Members

By: Silvia Escobar

Do you want to have a say in tuition rates, Montgomery College’s support of services like the Ride On bus, or the College’s efforts to stem the tide of identity theft? These are just a few areas where the student voice can make a difference in a big way.

Montgomery College students have a chance to be part of the decision making process by serving on the College’s Board of Trustees–but the deadline is now! Until April 3, the nominating committee is still accepting applications from Montgomery College students interested in serving one-year term on the Board of Trustees. The term runs from July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014.

Although trustees receive no financial compensation and the student trustee position requires an extensive time commitment beyond regular Board meetings, it is a position that provides the inside scoop, a say in important matters, and experience with a governing body.

Students with a current semester grade point average of at least 2.0 and completion of at least 18 credit hours at Montgomery College can apply. Students must be Montgomery County residents at the time of appointment and during term office and be enrolled in at least six credit hours of course work at Montgomery College. Employees of Montgomery College are not eligible to apply.

What is the process? Students interested in serving on the Montgomery College Board of Trustees must submit, via email, a letter of intent and a resume, along with supporting references, to Mr. Fred S. Evans, chairman of the Nominating Committee, at fredevans1970@gmail.com. Applications will not be accepted at Montgomery College.
All applications must be received by 5 p.m., Wednesday, April 3, 2013. Interviews will be conducted prior to April 12, 2013.

Student applicants must also attend an orientation session at Montgomery College before being interviewed by the nominating committee. Finally, the student trustee is appointed by the Governor, upon recommendation of the nominating committee.

Additional information about the nominating process is available from Ms. Arleen Graham at the Montgomery College Board of Trustees office 240-567-7120 or from Mr. Evans 301-424-5169.
