The Lost Germantown: The Meditation Corner

The noise free oasis

By Bora Ersoy

For many students, busy school schedules, study sessions, and campus noise can create great stress and discomfort. What students do not know is that on the Montgomery College-Germantown campus is a special corner dedicated for students and staff who need a moment of inner peace. Located on the fourth floor in the High Technology (HT) building is the campus’ meditation corner.

The rules of the meditation corner are simple:

  • One person may use the corner at a time,
  • Do not create any noise out of respect of those in the corner,
  • Do not bring in any kind of furniture as the corner’s small size cannot accompany it, and
  • *Keep any possessions within view to avoid thieves.

While its appearance could be mistaken for any other corner in the building, make no mistake that the meditation corner does a terrific job in giving people the sense of quiet isolation. The corner also works wonders as a prayer corner for students of Muslim faith who might suffer from schedule conflicts. Regardless of the reason, Montgomery College has given our campus a wonderful feature that more of its students should know about.
