International Women’s Day

By: Aramide Olorunyomi

On March 8, Professor Ann Sallie and Joanne Bagshaw showcased multiple essays in honor of International Women’s Day. The attention-grabbing essays are in the Library of the HS building, near the stairwell. Sabine Allou’s essay concerns women’s welfare and prostitution as a result of high unemployment, internationally. Allou also mentions, “Le Droit De Cuissage,” a situation in which all future female employees must have sexual relations with their employers for job security.  An essay by Yun Song discusses women’s difficulties in higher education and employment, while balancing roles in their family and community, as well as their careers. Song states the attempt to balance these respectively, can lead to physical and psychological trauma.  Trieu Hoang’s essay deals with misconceptions of the “housewife” lifestyle.  While the subjects of these essays address a range of human rights issues, one positive attribute is that these essays also act as evidence of strides women took, socially, culturally, and politically, and still do.
